THE BOOK THAT BROUGHT THE HEAT 🌶️  A fictional story inspired by this vintage cookbook.  Somewhere in San Antonio, Texas, this book may once have rested on a kitchen shelf within easy reach of the stove.  Imagine its owner wandering through a local market on a Saturday morning, surrounded by baskets of peppers—some familiar, some strange, and a few carrying warnings from vendors who knew better.  Careful with that one.  Naturally, that probably meant it was coming home.  The Whole Chile Pepper Book wasn't simply another cookbook. It was an invitation to experiment.  Maybe its pages were opened while something simmered on the stove. Maybe a recipe was followed exactly the first time—and completely ignored the second.  A little more pepper.  A little more spice.  And perhaps, occasionally, a little too much.  Years passed. Kitchens changed. Families grew older. Cookbooks slowly disappeared from countertops and found their way onto shelves.  Eventually, this one ended up at an estate sale in San Antonio, Texas, where I purchased it.  I don't know the real story of the person who owned it before me.  That's the wonderful thing about estate-sale finds.  Sometimes you don't get the history.  You just get the opportunity to imagine it.  And now this book is ready for another kitchen.  Maybe yours.
