Akira Fuwa (1901 - 1979) was a Japanese Western-style painter and watercolorist.
Birth and Death: December 1, 1901 - 1979
Birthplace: Kanda Misaki-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo
Studied under: Hakutei Ishii
Affiliations: Issuikai, Japan Watercolor Society
Pioneering Watercolor: He pioneered a unique style that was both improvisational and profound, utilizing the characteristic transparency of watercolors.
A Traveling Painter: He left behind many works depicting Japanese landscapes (especially Shinshu and Kobuchizawa) as well as European street scenes.
Philosophy: He believed that it is unnatural to paint a town or village without any people in it, and valued placing figures as accents within his landscapes.
Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art: Held a large-scale retrospective exhibition (Akira Fuwa Exhibition) and holds many related materials.
Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art: Houses works such as Morning in the Kitchen (Sekisuiji) and New Green of the Seine.
Works are also held in the Saku City Museum of Modern Art and the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum (currently Nagano Prefectural Art Museum). by AI
