Description
A stunning example of Japanese decorative lacquerware from the Meiji period (1868–1912), this elegant black lacquer vase (roiro-nuri) features masterfully executed polychrome and gilt decoration in the classical kachō-ga (bird-and-flower) tradition. The vase displays two beautifully rendered long-tailed paradise birds in cream and ivory tones with subtle red accent feathering, perched among sweeping branches of cherry blossom (sakura). The floral elements are rendered in gold (maki-e) and white against the deep lustrous black ground, creating a striking contrast characteristic of the finest Meiji export lacquerware. The classical ovoid form with a gently flared neck is typical of the period. Please note visible hairline cracks to the body as shown in photographs — priced accordingly.
